What should be done to make sure teams are equal

Having parity in sports now and days is what makes sports so interesting to watch. Parity means the quality or state of being equal or equivalent. In sports terms that means how many of the teams in the sport are of equal value. Parity comes up in conversations in sports because sports journalists and sports writers always talk about it on sports; shows. All of the commissioners of each sports league should all work as hard as they possibly can to keep their leagues as balanced as they can. Keeping the leagues balanced in sports is better for the fans. If the same teams win the championships every year, then fans will eventually get annoyed with the games, and the sport will become too predictable.

The Noll Scully Metric is a system that is used in sports to find out exactly how equivalent the league actually is. In the past decade, there have only been five different champions in the NBA which include; The Los Angeles Lakers, Boston Celtics, San Antonio Spurs, Miami Heat and the Detroit Pistons. On the other hand, in the past decade in the NFL, there has been seven different teams to win the Super Bowl which include; The Pittsburgh Steelers, New Orleans Saints, New York Giants, Indianapolis Colts, New England Patriots, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Baltimore Ravens.

Year after year, it seems as if the same teams are the most dominant, but when tournament time comes around, everything is different. That’s why the college basketball tournament is the most watched. During March, many people fill out what are called “brackets” to who they think will win the NCAA Championship. I have seen even people who haven’t watched a game all season participate in it. It is very hard to predict game by game who will win. Which means parity does exist in college basketball.
