The man pictured here was the last living member of the Widener Family Fortune. Fitz Eugene Dixon, Jr. was the last living direct descendant of the Peter A.B Widener. Unfortunately, on August 2, 2006 Fitz passed away at the age of 82.
I had the great fortune of meeting him at a Widener University function while I was the school's Student Government Vice President in 1998. Fitz was standing by himself over near the bar area of the reception. I walked over to him and introduced myself and made small talk. We commented about the beautiful spring day and student leadership and involvement. We then talked about Lee Iacocca once he found out I was from the Lehigh Valley.
Upon leaving one of my fraternity brothers walked up to me and asked if I knew who I was talking to. I stated I did not, but he was a nice fellow. I was then given the story of the man many of us just called Fitz.
